Shawnee Halloween Happenings

The biggest bash in town is the Shawnee Boo on Bell, hosted by Safe Events for Families in collaboration with a variety of non-profits. Here, you’ll find carnival games, costume contests, spooky storytelling, a car show, live bands and of course plenty of safe trick or treating. Boo on Bell happens Friday – Sunday before Halloween with most events starting at 6 p.m. Main Street trick or treating is from 3:30 – 5 on Saturday, to allow the littlest ghouls and goblins a chance to enjoy the festivities. Located in historic downtown Shawnee, it draws a scary good crowd from Oklahoma City. The free Pumpkinville Main Street Trick or Treat is free to all children 12 years old and younger. The Boo-Rod Auto Show is for the big kids, and you’ll find vintage rides from every era. Treats and Tricks Don’t miss out on the annual pet costume contest and its doggone amazing prizes, especially for the furry fiend who wins the Monster Mash costume. You’ll find it on the holiday weekend at the Community marketplace. Check out the paranormal tour, “13 Spirits,” and discover the ghastly history of Hobgood Manor. Enjoy Your Fourth of July BBQ in Shawnee

Oklahoma boasts a diverse, rich BBQ tradition, a Fourth of July staple. If you’re traveling in Shawnee for the Fourth, make it a long weekend of exploring some of the best BBQ in town (in between the downtown Independence Day celebrations, of course). Start at Billy Boy Bar-B-Que for casual scratch-made comfort food on the side with multi-hour smoked ‘Q as the main star. Van’s Pig Stands is a local chain famous for ribs, burgers and southern sides. Their Famous Pig Sandwich is a must, or get the Big Rib Dinner served with Texas Toast. On the side, baked or green beans, cole slaw, fried okra and mac and cheese are all popular picks. Save room for their dessert, including rum pie and carrot cake. You and the Que RibCrib BBQ and Grill is another local chain favorite serving up brisket, ribs, sandwiches and sides in a low-key environment. Try the award-winning championship ribs including baby backs, St. Louis style and ribsanity. There are plenty of sauces to choose from, but Oklahoma (sweet and sticky) is a local favorite. Robb’s Smokehouse offers the brisket dog, Polish sandwich, rib dinners and homemade sides like a smoked spud, and nothing ends […]
